Apidra?

Anyone ever heard of this insulin? Or, better yet, anybody on this insulin that uses a pump? I was in a conversation with my endocrinologist this morning and she mentioned this insulin. I hadn't heard of it, but I am a Humulog user and have been since my days of beef/pork injections!

All feedback welcome!! Please comment...........

I currently use Apidra, but I have tried every so-called rapid-acting insulin analog made (humalog, novolog and apidra), and my assessment is as follows:

First, YMMV (your mileage may vary), so please understand that my experience may not be the same as yours. However, after reading hundreds of comments on this topic on the Insulin-Pumpers discussion board, I feel my comments are pretty representative of the type 1 universe as a whole.

In terms of speed of activity, Humalog wins hands-down. It works the fastest, but also wears off the fastest (in exchange for speed, you give up duration of activity). I found Humalog had almost no tail of activity beyond 2 hours unless I dosed more than 10 units (which is rare), and even then, it was only maybe a half hour longer.

Novolog was, for me, a complete dud ... it worked only marginally faster than Regular and lasted almost as long as Regular ... about 8 hours to be exact. I absolutely hated using this insulin, it wasn't worth the premium price and I could have gotten comparable results using much cheaper Regular. Others claim it works great, so your experience will be unique to some extent.

Apidra fell in the middle. Its a tad slower (again, my experience here) than Humalog, but much faster than Novolog. But, the benefit is that it lasts longer than Humalog, which I found better matched my own digestion of foods. I should point out that Apidra is the only rapid-acting insulin analog that has received FDA approval for dosage after eating, although the tests were done on only a few people and I wouldn't recommend it. But that does suggest something about its relative speed.
